10 Ideas for what to include in your EYFS Learning Journey Tracker By: Ashlee Steward A Learning Journey in the form of a folder or booklet is an effective way to collect evidence of children's development under the key areas identified by EYFS. There are no right or wrong ways to collect evidence or how to display it, but do you ever wonder what else you could add to it? A learning journal enables you to present evidence of how children are progressing while in your care, whilst also being engaging to the children and work in partnership with parents. This ensures you can support the child’s needs whilst making the parents feel involved with their child’s learning process. Why not include the following if you are stuck for what to include inside: 1. Speech bubble templates: You can cut out speech bubble templates on card or stickers and use them to record what children say. Not only is this a simple way to support an observation, it also presents an event from a child's perspective and tracks their language development. These can then be added to their learning journey and can be used to track their progress with language against EYFS outcome goals over the term. If you do not want to waste ink or paper, you can always draw the bubbles directly onto the page usually a thick marker. 2. Include photographs: Most settings will have digital cameras which have made it really easy to include photographic evidence in tracking folders or booklets to support your observations and assessments. So keep your camera to hand and take photos of children in action to stick into and personalise their EYFS Learning Journey. If your setting is a camera free environment but you have an app/tablet you can use these in the same way - with the permission of your management etc, follow- ing your setting’s policies and procedures. 3. WOW Moments: Wow moments gives you and parents the opportunity to record their child's special achievements and make their contribution to tracking their child's Learning Journey. I would suggest having these templates prepared and you can send some home with the parents and inform staff in your setting where and how to complete a ‘wow moment’.
