Strategies for
working with Boys
By: Kathryn Beaney
Research shows us that boys are
underachieving at school.
Boys like to run – but they are told to walk.
Boys like to move – but they are told to sit
crossed legged on the carpet.
Boys like to be outside – but they are told to
stay in to finish their work.
Boys like super hero and weapon play – but they
are told that these types of play are not allowed.
We need to look for ways to engage boys.
Think about the following strategies:
• Offer themes and topics that interest boys such as
adventure, humour and sport.
• Observe the boys in your class, note down what they are
interested in, then start your planning based on their
interests.
• Are you taking learning outside as
much as possible?
• Do you provide lots of activity,
movement and hands on activities?
