The Benefits of Music By: Kathryn Beaney Young children enjoy musical activities and they are of great value to their development. Experience of music can take many different forms within the setting: • • • • • • • Singing during circle time Listening to someone playing and instrument Making instruments Playing their own instruments Listening to the sounds of different instruments Listening to music from different cultures Movement to music Let’s look at how it links to the different areas of development: Physical – gross motor skills through dance, hand-eye coordination whilst paying an instrument Intellectual – listening to rhythm, patterns and sequences. It is also a great activity to encourage creativity Language – children can learn the words of songs that are repeated, they help young children to vocalise Emotional – music can be used to express emotions. Singing within a group can build up confidence Social – singing and playing an instrument is often enjoyed as part of a group
