Bread Making By: Kathryn Making bread with children provides so many learning opportunities: Science – as the ingredients change due to heat. Maths – measuring the ingredients and dividing the dough into equal balls. Language and communication – as the children work as a group and talk about the process. Social skills - sharing and working as a team, eating the bread for their snack. Fine manipulative skills - strengthening fingers (a great pre-writing skill). Meaning – children can see the whole process and understand where bread comes from. Try the following recipe: 500g bread flour 1 packet of fast action yeast 1 teaspoon salt 28g butter 300ml warm water Method: 1 – Mix the dry ingredients together. 2 – Rub in the butter until it looks like breadcrumbs. 3 - Add enough water to make a dough. 4 – Knead for 15 minutes. 5 – Set aside for an hour and a half in the warm to rise. 6 – Separate into 8 balls, each ball can be made into a bread roll (be creative). 7 – Set aside for another hour. 8 – Cook at 220 degrees celsius for 8 to 10 minutes. 9 – Cool and enjoy. Make sure that your group isn’t too large and that all children can be involved in the process.
