Communicating with your children By : Ashlee
OWL ! 1 ) Observe your child 2 ) Wait for them to interact with you 3 ) Listen to them ! It ’ s all about having fun with your children ! Talk about things that interest them ! For example , if they ' re playing with dinosaurs , go over and comment “ roarrrrrrr , I ’ m a big dinosaur ”.
Prompt your children to continue the conversation ! For example , if your child is eating an apple , comment , “ mmm that looks yummy . I love apples ”. They will be likely to respond , asking you questions .
If your child doesn ’ t express themselves right the first time , don ’ t say “ that ’ s wrong ”, repeat the word back to them in the right way . For example , if your child says , “ I goed Dubai Mall ”, just say back to them , “ yes you did , you went to Dubai Mall .”
Explore words - talk about new words ; you can do this as you walk around the mall , or even in the car on the way home from nursery .
Extend what your child is saying by one more word than they can say . If they say “ soup please ” you say “ tomato soup please ”. This will help your children develop new vocabulary and learn descriptive words .
Remember , the more you repeat and model language for children , the more they will learn ! Always give them opportunities to explore , discover and play , this is where you will see language thrive .
