Do you know what Contingent Talk is ? by : Karen

This is when you have a ‘ conversation ’ with a baby about whatever has caught the baby ’ s attention .
“ Oh that ’ s a lovely car , are you making the wheels go round ? The wheels are going round and round . Look ! You ’ re making the car wheels go round ” would be an example of Contingent Talk with a baby examining a car and turning the wheels .
Children start to learn how words are used when they hear them in context and particularly when language is used about something that interests them .
Recent research suggests that hearing contingent talk could boost early language development .
So give it a try – talk to your babies about the things that they are interested in . Keep it simple and repeat words in different sentence structures to give the baby the feel of the language .
