December 21 marks the first
day of winter in Canada.
While winter means shorter,
colder days and, typically, more
clouds and less sun, vision ex-
perts are reminding people that
it’s just as important to protect
the eyes from the potentially
harmful ultraviolet rays from
the sun in winter as it is during
those muggy summer days.
“Your eyes are sensitive to
these rays all year round and
we don’t often consider the
reflections of the sun off the
snow. Overexposure to UV rays
all year round has been linked
to a multitude of problems, in-
cluding cataracts, degeneration
of the retina and damage to the
cornea,” says the Canadian
Association of Optometrists.
