Recording Drums Now, lets select some microphones. You don't have to spend a arm and a leg to record drums like the pros, here are some inexpensive ideas. For the kick drum, you can use a Shure Beta 52, AKG D112 or a MXL A-55. These mics range between $100 and $200. For the snare, I recommend this choice by many for years. The Shure sm57 it costs about $100. Now, for the tom drums, a solid mic for this application is a Sennheiser MD 421, but they are expensive. So, I suggest you pick up a few inexpensive condenser mics. Samson sells a few models at around $100. Then there's the high hat. Grab a AKG 451 if you can afford one, or get a Sterling ST31 for around $100. They also work great as overhead mics. Good Luck, and keep on recording.
