Recording Vocals : Part 4
In the previous issue, I went over EQing Vocals to help those
vocal tracks to cut through the mix, now I want to touch on
spicing up those vocals to smooth them out.
After I get my vocals sounding right with a little EQing,
I then add some compression. If you're a beginner, I
suggest starting with a ratio between 2:1 and 5:1. The
threshold depends on how much you want the vocals
Squashed. For the release I suggest you start with
1 to 3 ms. For the attack, set it around 250 to 350.
This should smooth and even out those vocals. Listen
to the effect while you increase or decrease compression.
Be aware that to much compression can kill a good vocal
track if you over compress it.
