EH: How is this school year special from
any past years?
Alicia:
There are several subjects that make this school year exciting to
Bear! He’s looking forward to growing his multiplication skills, learning to write
in Spanish, and playing the flute faster. Some additional subjects he feels will be
special are Nature and Culture studies. By the way, I asked my son this question
and this is what came out of his 8-year-old mouth.
EH: What is Bear’s favorite thing about
going back to school this time around?
Is he looking forward to this grade?
Alicia:
Bear is thrilled to reunite with all his friends! He is also relieved
that bullies will no longer be at his recess, as they have moved up a grade and
will be at another location.
EH: How do you prepare for his return
to school?
Alicia:
I make sure he’s covered on the supply front—whether it’s
making sure he has sunscreen and a sun hat for his gardening class, or ensuring
his clothing is up to par size-wise. Sometimes, weather dependent, Bear’s
class has “mud play”. For this fun messy activity, I make sure he has proper
‘mucking pants’ and rain boots that are the right size! My go-to resources for
Bear’s clothing are always second hand. I check out Ebay, Thredup, local thrift
shops, or sometimes eco-conscious brands like Nico Nico, Monica + Andy,
or Two Crows for Joy.
EH: Are there any precautions you take
during cold & flu season?
Alicia:
Maintaining the kind diet, superhero style is the best way to
fortify our immune system and fend off any bugs. My mantra for this is greens,
grains and beans. Avoid sugar and processed salty foods as much as possible!
Bear and I try to make miso soup from scratch at least four times a week, the
recipe can be found in my books The Kind Diet and The Kind Mama. We couple
this diet with mykind Organics Elderberry Gummies, Turmeric Gummies,
Kids Multi Gummies, our Vitamin D3 Spray in a little apple juice and B-12 spray.
If we’re feeling extra susceptible, we go with a spritz of our Vitamin C Spray,
Elderberry Syrup, and some drops of our Oil of Oregano.
EH: What are your favorite home remedies?
Alicia:
Making ume sho kuzu (The Kind Diet) and a sweet kuzu
(The Kind Mama), both are restorative tonics composed of kuzu (a Japanese
plant root), umeboshi plums, and shoyu. These tonics help heal your body and
help flush out all the bad bugs. I love making a fresh batch of miso soup; it does
wonders. Another favorite is a soothing bath with eucalyptus oil.
