IMPORTANCE OF MAGNESIUM
The human body contains approximately 25 grams of magnesium , half of which is found in the bones , and most of the rest is found in soft tissues . Although this doesn ’ t sound like a lot , most people are low in this very important mineral , which is crucial for our well-being . Magnesium acts as a co-factor in over 325 enzymatic reactions throughout the body affecting almost every facet of our health . Most importantly , it plays a critical role in energy production within the mitochondria of every cell .
When people are low in magnesium , they can feel fatigued , irritable , and sleep poorly . Magnesium enables the body to produce fuel at the cellular level so that we can function . It also plays an essential role in the movement of calcium and potassium ions across cell membranes . While calcium is required for muscular contraction , magnesium is needed for relaxation . These two minerals work oppositely to regulate everything from our heartbeat and blood flow to the conduction of nerve impulses and contraction of muscles . Research has shown that when the body is under stress , magnesium helps prevent many of the symptoms of stress .

WHERE DO WE GET MAGNESIUM FROM ?
In foods , magnesium is found naturally occurring in leafy greens and is the center part of the chlorophyll molecule . Magnesium is also found in many other foods such as whole grains like oats ; yogurt and kefir ; almonds ; sweet potatoes , and bananas — but only in relatively small amounts per serving .
One hundred years ago , our ancestors daily diet provided around an estimated 500mg of Magnesium . Today our modern daily diet typically provides only 150-300mg of Magnesium . What happened to our Magnesium ? The Sad American Diet , modern industrial food processing and preservation , soil depletion of minerals caused by pesticides , herbicides , and over-harvesting . Considering this , along with chronic stress and certain prescription drugs such as protein pump inhibitors for acid reflux — which inhibit magnesium absorption — it is hardly surprising that over 50 percent 1 of the American population is low or deficient in magnesium !
