Keepi n g Ki d s Heal t hy For Their Journey Back to School by Dawn Thorpe Jarvis, Senior Director of Nutrition Science & Educational Content During summer vacation, kids get to relax and have some fun. This often means eating extra treats like ice cream, perhaps having sugary drinks and eating fast foods when traveling or on-the-go. When our kids return back to school, we need to think about how to keep them healthy and good nutrition is a key part of that journey. Research studies show that children who eat a nutritious breakfast function better at school, so this is a great starting place. What should a healthy breakfast for kids include? As kids are growing rapidly, their breakfast should always include some protein. It’s important not only for supporting growth of muscles, tissues and bones, but it also helps to stabilize blood sugar, which means they will feel full longer and crave less sugary foods and drinks. Eating protein in the morning will restart their metabolism to burn calories, after their overnight fast, which will help them to maintain a healthy body weight. Additionally, protein is necessary for the proper function of the immune system and we definitely need to think about some immune support when they hit the classrooms again! † These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
