“B Lab is excited to welcome Garden of Life to the growing community of B Corps,” said Jay Coen Gilbert, co-founder
of B Lab. “As a leading Dietary Supplement brand dedicated to Certified Organic and non-GMO project verified
products, Garden of Life is in a unique position to advance awareness of socially and environmentally responsible business
practices, supply chain traceability, and public transparency with accountability within the supplement industry.”
What is Covered in a B Labs Audit for Certif ication?
To become a B Corp you must meet rigorous standards of:
SOCIAL PRACTICES - e.g. ethical sourcing of raw materials
and fair manufacturing, charitable giving and participation
and company culture are all certified as best-in-class.
ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE - e.g. raw material
sources are organic and non-gmo, manufacturing uses
best-in-class energy and waste practices, home office
is LEED GOLD certified, packaging is recyclable and uses
recycled and biodegradable materials, etc.
ACCOUNTABILITY - e.g. corporate governance and
oversight are socially and environmentally motivated,
third-party auditing of financial, HR and other practices, etc.
TRANSPARENCY - e.g. everything from raw material
sourcing, to production, to company’s books and practices
are available for view and third-party inspection, etc.
A B Corp audit is very in-depth. The B Lab team reviews
every aspect of a business from it’s employee handbook
to the sourcing of raw materials to manufacturing.
B Lab investigates sustainability practices including
recyclable packaging, sustainable papers and inks,
as well as corporate offices (ours is LEED GOLD certified)
and sustainable energy commitment (we offset 100%
of our energy with Green-e Wind Power).
Once the B Lab auditors complete their task,
they actually build the principles of a For-
Benefit company into the company’s charter.
(That’s right–we actually amended our
corporate filings with the State of Delaware
to reflect that we mean business—B Corp
business—for the long haul).
