EDITOR’S NOTE
When Carol Graham Cline first came up with the idea of hosting
a charity golf scramble the day after the Kentucky Derby, I was
skeptical. Really skeptical. Who in the world is going to want to
attend yet another event after Derby? I thought.
Thankfully, Carol and her crew plunged ahead with plans for
Hair of the Dog, a May 7 golf scramble Valley View Golf Club, and
raised a total of $5,000 for Southern Indiana Animal Rescue League
and The Arrow Fund, which rescues abused and neglected animals
in Kentucky and Indiana.
I am so glad I was wrong. And I can’t wait for next year’s event.
For The Love of Farmers Markets
One of my favorite things to do on a Saturday morning is get
up early and head to the New Albany Farmers Market downtown.
My husband and I – with our daughter in tow – grab a coffee at
Quill’s and then take our time shopping for week’s produce and
other goods, ensuring we stop and socialize, too. I’m trying so
hard to steer us onto a healthier path, and taking advantage of
our local farmers markets helps with this endeavor. You can read
more about frequenting your local farmers market beginning on
page 14 in this issue.
(From left) Greg Arnold, his son Garrett Arnold, his father Bill Arnold and friend
Todd Frossard (not pictured) won the Hair of the Dog charity golf scramble May
7 at Valley View. The event was sponsored by Allterrain Paving & Construction,
Waypoint, First Savings Bank, Samtec, Romeo & Co General Contractors,
Pro4mance Fire and Water Restoration, City of New Albany, Old 502 Winery, Taco
Bell, Frank Monroe Heating & Cooling, Dean Payton Construction, Hollis Paving,
Werncke Construction, GCH International, WesBanco, Alpha Energy, Glacier
Heating & Air, Golfers Paradise, Schmitt Furniture and Plumbers Supply.
Oh, Ralph Lauren
Iconic designer Ralph Lauren and his preppy polo fashion might
be partially responsible for our tendency to think of polo – the
athletic competition – as a sport only for the so-called elite. It’s
not. At least that’s the message the Louisville Polo Club hopes to
get across to the local community. Read more about it in an article
by Steve Kaufman (page 18), which is accompanied by several
gorgeous photographs taken by Steve Squall.
Buck The Trend
It’s time to add diversity to athletics, says Howie Lindsey of 790
KRD – but he’s not talking about that kind of diversity. Stop with
the specialization and start letting your kid play all the sports, he
argues on page 32.
Get A Glimpse
Need motivation to make your health a priority? Try having your
child admit he’s angry with you for shaving years off your life by
your poor eating habits and lack of exercise. That’s what happen to
Bonnie Walker-Armstrong. The Louisville Athletic Club member
shares her inspirational story in her own words on page 42.
