THE WEDDING ISSUE LOVE and MARRIAGE Photos and Q&A by Jennifer McNelly What marriage advice would you give to newlyweds? We asked several Southern Indiana residents to weigh in. Daniel: “Always find ways to treat your spouse. Take the initiative to observe and then act. Your wife will really appreciate it if you go out of your way to do something special for her.” Olivia: “I would say to really pay attention to the things that matter to your spouse. For example, Daniel really enjoys sports – I hate sports – and he likes to hang out with his friends. But I know it matters a lot to him when I plan something with sports and friends versus something that just I want to do. I know it makes a big deal when I plan something that genuinely matters to him.” Daniel and Olivia Flinders Married 1 year Corydon “The most important part of a marriage is communication. For any couple that is beginning their life together, there should be communication and also trust. When you make decisions, make the decisions together. Communication and trust, those are the two most important principles of a marriage.” Francisco and Graciela Bisoso Married 26 years Sellersburg “Honest is so crucial in any marriage. Always be honest.” Pam and Kevin Polston Married 26 years New Albany “My husband passed away a few years ago, but for any newlywed, I would tell them to have patience. Remember that you married a human.” Katrina Johansen Married 7 years New Salisbury “It’s important to be completely committed to each other in a marriage. It keeps you going in the hard times. Marriage is much more than a contract, it is a covenant you make with God as well.” Jason and Nora Miles Married 15 years New Albany 84 EXTOL : AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2018
