God, this was weird. The way the boy fondled her check, gazing eyes making her heart pick up. He acted so fascinated in her, like he never say a human before. His hand stroked her chopped hair, pulling a loose strand behind her ear. The grip on her shoulder loosened, the boy focusing on her hair. Maeve’s mind clicked.

Now’s her chance.

Maeve’s knee jerked into his stomach, the boy cringing back his grip, Maeve shoving him off . She scramble upright, winding around to sprint away. Her heart raced as her legs faltered from the sudden movement, muscles sore and screaming to slow down. The boy trailed behind her, the jangle of the wooden jewelry sounded like bells in Maeve’s ears. Her throat constricted as her pale blue house came into view. Maeve cried in joy, pushing what little strength she had left, legs numb.

The lightening bugs twinkled as she collapsed on the grassy yard, pajama pants dug into firm dirt, grass tickling her clothed skin. She gaped for air, legs trembling, using her arms to hold herself up. Tears trickled down her red checks, looking over her shoulder to see the boy panting at the forest’s edge.

Golden eyes meet chocolate brown. Maeve shivered, turning back to steady her breath, licking her dry lips. She wiped her sweaty forehead with her sleeve, coughing as she wobbled up, staggering with sore legs. She needed a drink and some rest. Lots of rest. She stumbled to the back door, turning once more to see nothing but the flickering lights of the small bugs.

He came straight from a fantasy novel, pointed ears with dangling necklaces, unusual eyes and a fur cape covering his shoulders, falling below his knees. The cape almost acted like camouflage, maybe a tradition from his home. Nothing came up when searching the web, only sighting of the yellow eyes.
