The howling at midnight made Maeve want to rip out what was left of her hair.
When moving into her new house with her parents, Maeve didn’t expect any wolves in the forest nearby. She was positive that wolves didn’t live in southeastern New Jersey, but she knew something was off about the place.
When her parents surprised her and her younger brother about moving near a forest south, she didn’t love the idea. Her brother Caleb was for it though, he loved exploring new places, and the forest was the place for him. They barely even looked at what the house had to offer before buying it. Who does that?
When moving into the house, it wasn’t bad. The floor was polished wood, everything seemed up to date and the rooms were bigger than her old house. The view from the back porch was the best part, seeing the miles and miles of pine trees made Maeve look in awe. All was good, but until it hit midnight , that’s when the problem began.
Howling.
The howling was loud and stretched, echoing through the woods continuously until early morning. It went on for the second night and now. It was nearing the end of summer break, the air getting cooler with a chilly wind blowing and Maeve wanting to sleep as long as she can before school strips her sleep away.
After laying in her bed what seemed to be hours, twisting and turning, Maeve decided to investigate. She knows it’s a bad idea, lots of bad things happen when the night comes but she’s just dying to know what is making the horrible howling.
She sat up sluggishly on her bed, kicking off the sheet with a groan, sliding her legs to the side. She needed to prepare first. She stumbled in her dark room, searching in her desk drawer to pull out an old switchblade. Her lucky switchblade, helping her through tricky situations before. She shuffled to her door, stifling a yawn as she slid on her sneakers, grabbing the flashlight that stood on her cabinet. Pulling a hoodie over her head, she snuck down the stairs; she hoped nothing thought her as nice meal.
