" weighty " Is s ue
To weight or not to weight, that’s been a question for a long time at Troy Buchanan
High School (TBHS). Beginning this year, the answer on whether or not to weight
grades is “yes.” The shift to weighted grades comes after nearly two years of
discussion. Weighted grades are letter grades assigned with a numerical advantage
when determining grade point average (GPA).
The weighted grade system will use a three-tiered approach. Students can opt to
challenge themselves through a more rigorous course load by enrolling in designated
classes.
In order to earn the additional weighted points in any tier, a student must complete
the course with a semester grade of a 70% or higher. The Class of 2017 (current
sophomores) is the first class to have the opportunity to take full advantage of the
weighted grade system.
