blessing in disguise. I think once you realize
that, and you don’t panic and you keep your
faith, the industry becomes way easier. Even
for me that’s still hard sometimes because
you’re waiting around. I love acting and I
always can’t wait to get back on set, but you
have to remember to stay prayed up and have
faith that the next job is going to come.
MADE: What are some of your goals?
KP: I want to act forever and eventually open
my own production company and with my
production company I want to be able to
put new faces from my hometown onto the
scene. And really give opportunities to where
I’m from—Sacramento. Like, hold castings in
Sacramento for roles. I really want to give out
opportunities for people to evolve and fall in
love with a different craft. That’s my goal, but
for now I want to reach my acting goals first.
That’s just to hold own movies by myself and
hold my own TV show by myself.
in different demographics. Me personally, I’m
all about quality. That’s all I really care about. I
don’t really care who’s doing what project—I’m
just really into quality.
MADE: You were on BET’s Lift Every Voice
earlier this year. How has your faith played a role
in your success?
KP: Faith is everything. A lot of actors in the
past gave up because of the lack of faith and
because acting is more of a marathon than a
sprint. It’s not like anything else. It’s all about
longevity. You can start off super-fast and then
crash or you can start off super slow and out
of nowhere you can blow up. I don’t think you
can ever be an overnight success. People say
that you can…well you could as far as fame,
but you could do something really big and
not have a lot of projects to follow up. Or the
follow up projects that you have may not be
what you intended them to be.
I feel like faith is everything because you
have to realize that everything that happens is
happening for a reason. God is doing that for
a reason. You have to look at everything as a
ADVICE FOR THE
ASPIRING ACTORS
Acting can be a tough field to break
into. Here, Keith Powers offers his
advice for aspiring actors…
1.
“Get into a class and fall in love with
the craft.”
2.
“Watch a lot of movies. Study the
actors’ work. Find out who the director is,
see what movies they’ve done in the past.
Really research the directors and writers
and what type of work they do. Figure out
your favorite genre.”
3. “Never give up. I know that’s cliché,
but with acting it’s easy to give up. It’s so
annoying sometimes. I feel like anyone
in acting with the right team can be
successful. It’s just about how long are
you willing to stick it out for. A lot people
will say, ‘I’m not going to do this anymore.
I just want to write or produce,’ but if
they would have stuck with it they would
have a couple months away from booking
that job that put them over.”
