PHOTO CREDIT Elliot Ashby Stylist, Empress Hill M eet the BLK.ID Twins from New York. The identical twin deejays have captured audiences through their mixing since the age of 11. Together, TP and Perks have mastered their own unique sound for all genres to enjoy. The BLK.ID Twins spoke with MADE about their love for the craft, fashion and authenticity. MADE: You’re identical twin deejays from New York. Talk about your start in music and your journey thus far? BLK.ID: We started deejaying when we were 11 years old as The Perkins Twins. As we got older, at the age of 15 or a bit younger, our dad gave us a shot at a barbecue. As we began perfecting our craft even-the-more we started doing club shows for the 21 and older market. From there we began to build a brand deejaying as BLK.ID that expanded to not only music, but fashion as well. MADE: So, you’ve been influenced by legendary deejays like DJ Jazzy Jeff, Kid Capri and Grandmaster Flash just to name a few. How have you been able to cultivate your own sound coming from a place as instrumental in music as New York? BLK.ID: Our cultivation comes through the way we play. Today you get most deejays who have a routine or playlist and stick to that by playing what people want to hear opposed to giving people what they need to hear. Every deejay is going to play their own thing. For us as the BLK.ID Twins we’ll go back and play something like Mystikal’s ‘Danger’ or Sisqo’s ‘Thong Song’ and bring people down memory lane to make them want more. We’re not just going to give you the quick Top 40 set. We read our crowds and that’s what we’ve learned from a lot of older deejay sets. You don’t just play what’s hot right now, you play what once kept people moving and you play what’s made-magazine.com | 31
