You

may recognize him from his breakout role in BET ’ s The New Edition Story , but Keith Powers is not new to this . Oftentimes we see actors like Powers rise to stardom and assume their success happened overnight , but there are many years of unnoticed hard work and dedication that went into it . For Powers , it was when he starred in Straight Outta Compton , The Walking Dead , Pretty Little Liars and other various roles that he realized he could really take his acting career to the next level . In this exclusive interview with MADE , the Sacramento-native opens up about his rise to stardom and how his faith and focus are the major keys to his grind …
MADE : When did you know you were made for Hollywood ?
KP : That ’ s a good question . I never really thought about that . I guess when I started booking multiple jobs . I was like , “ Oh snap , I think can do this .” I did talent shows as a kid , but I didn ’ t think about it because I wanted to play sports , but when I started booking jobs out here , it really helped me start believing in myself and believe that I was made for Hollywood .
MADE : Do you feel like it was several opportunities that catapulted your success or do you think it happened after a special performance ?
KP : I think it was several opportunities . I feel like every job has pushed me further in a way that ’ s not rushed . You don ’ t want to get certain success too early because you may not be able to handle it and you ’ ll lose all of it so fast . For me , it ’ s like good [ amount ] and it ’ s not too much too handle . It was just a series of events like Straight Outta Compton , New Edition Story , Famous in Love , The Walking Dead — they all have helped me .
MADE : You ’ ve accomplished a lot — what has the grind been like for you ?
KP : The grind has been everything . I think the grind is all about trying to stay consistent in booking and work
