FUEL UP, PLAY 60 AND WIN! a group of 4th and 5th grade students, entered a “Casting Call” contest and won ?rst prize, which was an Xbox Kinect Kiosk system. William Cappel students are using their winnings in productive ways. The school plans on using the $10,000 to build a small track at the school. The track will be used during physical education class, recess, for the school?s walking and running clubs and will even be accessible to the community. William Cappel Elementary (WCE) students and teachers discovered the joys of winning last year. Since 2009 the school has been a part of the Fuel Up to Play 60 program (FUTP60). This program is a free in-school nutrition and physical activity program founded by the National Dairy Council and the NFL in cooperation with the US De- partment of Agriculture. Last year, the school e ntered many contests through the FUTP60 program with some wonderful results. Through the “Back to Football” contest, WCE was awarded a $10,000 health and wellness grant, physical education equipment, four Xbox Kinect systems and a visit from the St. Louis Rams. They have been used in PE class, during indoor recess, as a class reward and occasionally during walking club. Research shows well-nourished kids tend to be better students, have stronger academic achievement, better attendance, better behavior and better test scores. Numerous studies also show physical activity has been found to support learning and may help students improve self-esteem, cognitive function and test scores. In a world bombarded with television, computers and video games, kids sometimes need to be motivated to “play!” The Fuel Up to Play 60 website has many ideas and resources for students, parents and educators.
