LATCHKEY: Linking to the Classroom It?s a tough job, but someone?s got to do it. Whether you are headed to work at the wee hours of the morning or working late, the Latchkey program in the Lincoln County R-III School District is more than before and after school care for students. Latchkey isn?t just an extension of the school day, but rather an extension of the classroom. The program stresses character education and community service while serving up monthly themes that coincide with crafts and activities for the students. During the spring of 2013, the Lincoln County R-III Latchkey program was awarded the 2013 Top Notch Tab Top Pandemonium Collector from the Ronald McDonald House. Students enrolled in Latchkey last year also donated more than 720,000 grains of rice through www.Freerice. com, which helps feed children around the world. In addition to the lessons in character education, students enrolled in Latchkey also have access to extra school support. A+ Tutors visit the Latchkey sites after school to give students one-on-one tutoring, assist homework and help students study. The Latchkey program began in 2009-10 school year with sites at all of the elementary schools. Now, the program has expanded to not only include additional elementary schools, but also early childhood and middle school. Approximately 500 students enjoy the Latchkey program.
