Mid 13th Powis Castle begins life as a medieval fortress , built by century Welsh prince Gruffudd ap Gwenwynwyn .

Owen de la Pole ( also known as Owain ap Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn ) becomes 1st Lord of Powis , following the death of his father Gruffudd ap Gwenwynwyn .
Hawys , daughter of Owen , inherits the Lordship , despite claims from her uncles to claim the Lordship . She marries John Charleton .
Lack of a male heir results in the castle being divided between two daughters , Joyce who marries Sir John Grey and Joan , who marries Sir John Tiptoft .
Powis is leased to Sir Edward Herbert , the second son of William Herbert , 1st Earl of Pembroke and Anne Parr ( sister of Catherine Parr , the sixth wife of Henry VIII ).
Sir Edward Herbert purchases the castle and estate .
William Herbert , Edward ’ s son becomes the first Earl of Powis . An honour bestowed on him by Charles I following his support during the Civil War .
Percy 2nd Lord Powis is convicted of treason for supporting the ‘ wrong ’ side during the civil war .
Percy ’ s son William Herbert , the 1st Marquess of Powis inherits the castle and embarks on renovations to turn the castle into a Baroque home .
William Herbett flees to France with the exiled King James II and stays there until his death .
The 2nd marquess , son of William Herbert and also named William , returns to Britain and continues to work on the garden assisted by Adrian Duval , a French gardener .
Edward Clive ( son of Robert Clive ‘ Clive of India ’) marries Henrietta Herbert , daughter of the 1st Earl of Powis ( 2nd creation ).
George Herbert , great-grandson of Edward Clive , marries Lady Violet Ida Evelyn Lane-Fox . Violet worked on the garden for the next 18 years .
George modernises the castle , adding electric lighting and a hot-water central heating system .
George ’ s eldest son , Percy is fatally wounded on the Somme .
Violet dies aged 63 in a motorcar accident .
Mervyn , son of George and Violet , is killed in an aeroplane crash on active service in World War II .
George Herbert dies aged 90 . Powis Castle is bequeathed to the National Trust .
