Island Home Spotlight : Hillside Sanctuary Comfort & privacy on San Juan Island

ON A SMALL PLATEAU , ALONG the top of a steeply sloping hillside , this San Juan Island retreat provides a breathy sanctuary for its residents and comfortable accommodations for guests . The living spaces are basked in natural light and sweeping views of the Puget Sound . In the main house , a pair of stone fireplaces flank either side of a central stone staircase , separating the main level into public and private realms . Generous French doors off the primary living space open to an airy deck , melding the indoor and out , presenting the allusion that you ’ re in a treehouse .
The guest house , located just a stone ’ s throw down the slope , offers private bedrooms on the lower level and generous common areas above . A full kitchen and cozy living room give this space a sense of home . But it ’ s the dining room here that steals the show . A three-sided glass object , it floats above the forest , offering peak-a-boo views of the water beyond .

Clerestory windows make ocean views the focus as a series of simple stone volumes give the main house and guest house a solidness that blends with the surrounding tree-studded , rocky shoreline . Warm and inviting , the use of a small wood stove offers warmth on chilly days . A deck off the master bedroom provides a quiet space for morning coffee and the deck off the main living space rests among the branches with a view just below its ledge of the glass dining room in the guest house .
