An Orca Breaching

An Orca Breaching

The Southern Resident Orcas are the most prevalently seen orcas around the San Juan Islands . Fish eaters , they consume up to 400 pounds of fish per day — 80 % of which is chinook salmon . It ’ s believed chinook is favored because of its high fat and calorie content . Lucky whale watchers may see an orca breach . ( A breach or ‘ Big Splash ’ is when two thirds or more of a whale ’ s body rise out of the water .) It ’ s believed this behavior is often a form of communication , but it could also be a way to shake off parasites or just to have fun .
