So Much to Explore ...

Pat Hoglund , Editor

AS A CHILD MY PARENTS would take my three brothers and me to Seattle where we ’ d explore the waterfront , Pike Place Market , the Seattle Center and during the summer we ’ d find our way into the Kingdome to watch the Seattle Mariners play . I loved my visits to the Emerald City .

Today , some 40 years later , I still find myself intrigued with what the city has to offer ; and as is often the case I am repeating my parents ’ travels with my own children . On a recent trip there I watched as my 14-year-old daughter walked along the waterfront taking in the sights with two of her girlfriends . They were equally enthralled with the hustle and bustle of the day . They rode the ferris wheel where on a clear day they could see across the Puget Sound and look toward my childhood home of Bremerton . We found our way to the Pike Place Market where they explored the gum wall , grabbed a coffee from the original Starbucks ( or maybe it was a hot chocolate ), and watched the fish mongers play catch and release with Pacific salmon .
One of my favorite things to do is take my son to a Seattle Mariners baseball game . We both love baseball and it ’ s hard to beat watching a game at Safeco Park . It ’ s one of the many pat hoglund photo treasures afforded to the people of the Pacific Northwest and it ’ s a favorite pastime of mine . Of course there are many other things to do , and in this issue of Explore : NW you ’ ll find a story on the 10 Best Places to Visit while you ’ re in the Emerald City . If you live in Seattle I urge you to take a staycation and reacquaint yourself with what the city has to offer . And if you live in another city I like to think you ’ ll find the story helpful and insightful . You ’ ll find the story on page 36 .
If you ’ re looking for something different then take advantage of what the city of Victoria offers . Believe me , there ’ s so much to do there that you ’ ll want to extend your stay no matter how many days you give yourself . We have a great story found on page 32 of this issue . Like so many travelers , you ’ ll come to love Victoria for all it is and all it offers .
But don ’ t stop there . I encourage you to carve out some time to go on a whale watching tour . It ’ s hard to find a better venue than the San Juan Islands . I ’ ve witnessed the orcas up close and they ’ re incredible animals . They have an interesting history in the Pacific Northwest , in particular in the San Juans , and you ’ ll find our story on page 40 worth reading . I know I learned a lot while I was editing it and I think you will , too . And this time of year whales ( orcas and the occasional humpback ) can be seen regularly throughout the islands . Time it right you ’ ll see why families and wildlife enthusiasts make this annual pilgrimage .

It is in that spirit that everyone at Kenmore Air and the editorial staff at Explore : NW encourage you to take advantage of what this region has to offer . There ’ s so much to see and do that you ’ ll likely never run out of options . That much I know from my childhood and as adult . explore : NW
