World-Renowned Whale Watching
By Slater Moore
The waters surrounding the San Juan Islands are known as one of the best whale
watching destinations in the world — which is what attracted the renowned wild-
life photographer, Slater Moore. Specializing in whale photography, Slater flies all
over the globe to capture these amazing mammals in their natural habitats. “I love
traveling to the Pacific Northwest. The whale sightings are unbelievable and the
backgrounds are second to none. It’s by far one of my favorite places to photograph
whales,” said Slater.
Most notable among the whales found in the San Juans are the salmon-eating
“Southern Resident” J, K, and L pods, along with the marine mammal-eating “Tran-
sient” orcas. Humpback whales, grey whales and Minke whales can also be seen
among the diverse ocean population. To see more of Slater’s work in the San Juans
