A Never-Ending Journey

THE SUN WAS HIGH . THE blue skies made for a picture-perfect day . Temperatures hovered in the mid 40s all week and the second day of the winter blackmouth opener was no different . It was the second day of December and it was biting cold . When the wind blew hard enough , and the boat dipped into the valley of a small swell , spray from the Puget Sound made its way above the boat ’ s gunnel and peppered my boat mates and me . I wore a stocking cap and mittens , but was otherwise unaffected by the bitter cold . My mind was preoccupied with what truly was important at that particular point of my life : catching a salmon .
Like most things worth pursuing , salmon fishing in the San Juan Islands is a somewhat technical endeavor . At times you might be able to show up , drop a herring down to the bottom and catch a salmon but you won ’ t do it consistently . In order to regularly catch salmon here you need to pay close attention to the tides , the wind , and bottom structure not to mention a keen understanding of your tackle . It is a puzzle that takes years to master , but it ’ s worth mastering . At the end of the day there were eight winter blackmouth on ice , all weighing between 7 and 12 pounds . The four of us went home with a limit of pat hoglund photo fresh salmon in December and as I placed my dinner fork into a freshly barbecued fillet I was reminded of what is truly special about the San Juan Islands . Which leads me to the premier issue of Explore : NW magazine .
The San Juan Islands are very much a part of this magazine as are the many destinations that Kenmore Air flies . It is not by accident , either . If you ’ re at all like me you might consider salmon fishing in Desolation Sound ( page 44 ) or teeing up a golf ball at a handful of British Columbia ’ s nicer tracks ( page 52 ). Regardless of where your travels take you — whether it ’ s for work , vacation , adventure , shopping , or a weekend getaway — I ’ m confident your experience will be memorable . And with any luck you ’ ll be remembering it long after your journey is over — just like the fillet of salmon I enjoyed months after my fishing trip was over . explore : NW
