High school friends, Reg Collins and Bob Munro worked as mechanics at Pan Am in the early 1940s. They purchased a wrecked Aeronca K in 1944. The hope was to rebuild the 40-horsepow- er floatplane and go into business for themselves fixing small airplanes. But when their fellow high school buddy and pilot, Jack Mines, returned home at the end of World War II, the business idea expanded to include flight instruction and charter work. The company, founded years earlier by the elder Wright as a small builder before moving to Seattle, had already made a name for itself when plans for the World’s Fair began. The risk they took in taking on this project paid off, though, and the Space Needle became an instant hit. Postcards featuring the Space Needle made their way to mailboxes around the world.
