Rice defeated 23-21 on opening night a year ago .
Here ’ s the lead in the Daily Sun story that night :
RICE — The Kool-Aid ( or better put , Blue Raid ) that new Rice Coach Royse Slechta is making at Rice , where his Bulldogs not only won their opener , but scored more points ( 57 ) than they scored in five district games ( 56 ) a year ago .
Slechta , who has been an offensive coordinator for 28 years , believes in the Air-Raid , fastpaced , throw the football early and often offense that redefined college football in recent years .
He has brought the Air-Raid to Rice along with a bevy of other creative ideas about how to change a program that won four games in the last three years . He even makes his own blue Kool-Aid ( a strong and sugary version ) for his kids who now run his Blue-Raid offense for a team that wears blue and white uniforms . Drink up ! That ’ s the way 2024 started for Rice . It ended with the Bulldogs in the playoffs — and the first step to building a great program .
“ We did gain confidence this year ,” Slechta said . “ They came a long way after winning four games in three years .”
Maybe it was the Blue Kool-Aid ...
