MILDRED — Colin Powell once said , “ There are no secrets to success . It is the result of preparation , hard work , and learning from failure .”
For the Mildred Eagles football team , the results of the 2024 season involved years of hard work by the players and coaching staff resulting in one of the best seasons in Mildred Eagle football history as the Eagles have quietly built into a good program ready to leap forward .
The Eagles finished the regular season undefeated , going three rounds deep in the playoffs before finally falling , finishing the season with a 12-1 record . It was the best record for Mildred since the 2012 season .
The Eagles went into the season with plenty of questions . The Eagles suffered losses at quarterback , running back , and in the secondary from graduation from the prior year . The Eagles knew the senior class was talented , the offensive line had potential , and they would have weapons to keep up with anyone but the questions remained .
It became clear early on , the Eagles were going to be good as they blitzed through non-district play . The Eagles shutout Iola in the season opener by a score of 26-0 despite not playing well . They followed it up with an 81-7 drubbing of Rice that saw the Eagles leading 70-7 at halftime . The Eagles gave up the lone touchdown on a special teams . The rest of the games in non-district play were not even close .
The first big test for the Eagles was the Frankston game . Frankston was picked to win the district and was very talented and Mildred blew them away by the score of 45-20 . The closest game in district play was the game against Kerens , a rivalry game
