For Yessika , the appeal of organic farming and living a minimalist lifestyle began when she was a child . The Last American Man , written by Elizabeth Gilbert , and Into the Wild by John Krakauer were major influences . Once they knew how they wanted to live , they had to decide where to live . Locally sourcing meat in their part of California was a challenge . After considering their dog Roe ’ s need to run ( he ’ s a 75 pound Border Collie / Leonberger mix puppy ), the fact they could live on our farm rent free , work on the property and be close to family , the decision was made .
