A key feature of a cloud-hosted solution is the
ability to access a range of third-party vendor
data easily, now widely available through
APIs (application programming interfaces).
The ability to stream diverse data sources into
a single location simplifies access to data.
This invites the concept of a cloud-hosted
workspace for early-stage exploration. In
this vision, every relevant piece of data from
across an organization is accessible from a
single place, alongside any available vendor
data. Thus, cloud-hosted processing can be
run on all the available data simultaneously,
executing bespoke workflows to meet
the requirements of the organization. The
autonomous nature of the processing means
it can be run as frequently as required,
maintaining an evergreen exploration portfolio
(Figure 4).
Perhaps the single biggest challenge in
realizing this vision is the requirement for all
the input datasets to be integrated through
a common model. We believe the solution
lies in the combination of trusted techniques,
such as biostratigraphy, with emerging
technologies, such as machine learning, to
assist in the classification and integration of
datasets, as discussed in the article by Mike
Simmons et al., in the June 2019 Neftex
Exploration Insights magazine. The ultimate
objective is that any time a new piece of
data is collected, be it from a core plug or
a new seismic interpretation, the changes
are instantly available for incorporation into a
global screening workflow (Figure 4; Harvey
and Zaborski, 2019). This vision embodies
the Planet to Pore philosophy that is guiding
cloud-hosted software development at
Halliburton Landmark.
CONCLUSION
Cloud-hosted basin screening has the
potential to help address the challenges
facing petroleum exploration. By acting
as a workspace for exploration, diverse
datasets can be brought together and
processed simultaneously. This means
that all interpretations are based on the
latest available data. Moreover, the speed
of processing is such that many scenarios
can be tested rapidly, and the impact of
key uncertainties readily examined. When

innovating new plays, ideas can be tested
in minutes without the danger of investing
a large amount of time into a concept that
is fundamentally flawed. Ultimately, the
automation of the core workflow allows global
play portfolios to be continually maintained
and updated with the latest content at no
extra expense to staff resources. Cloud-hosted
screening technologies enable explorers to
spend more time creating and testing ideas,
and less time manipulating data.

senior software developer at Halliburton Landmark, for PLAYFINDER: A NEW LOOK
this contribution to the development of this product. PlayFinder is a cloud-hosted dashboard that allows
users to understand the key plays in a region,
recognize appropriate play analogues and identify
future potential. In this latest upgrade, PlayFinder has
been given a new look.
