Analogues for the Tuwaiq
Mountain Unconventional
Play
There is potential for a prolific
unconventional resource interval within the
Middle–Late Jurassic of the Middle East.
Lessons learned from producing analogues
can greatly expedite our understanding of
this emerging resource interval and help
high-grade the most prospective areas.

Welcome to the March issue of the Exploration Insights magazine! Our regular readers
will be familiar with the breadth of products that comprise the Neftex ® Insights portfolio.
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, and highlight some of the work
carried out by my team.
As the Solution Owner for Regional Petroleum Geoscience, I am responsible for our
portfolio of regional interpretive products, including gross depositional environment maps,
chronostratigraphic charts and play cross sections, and the data gathering that underpins
them. For example, recent work by my team looking at the potential in the Egyptian Red
Sea was discussed in last month’s issue of this magazine. I also oversee FairwayFinder, the
first of our next generation applications, which processes Neftex geoscience content to
deliver play fairway assessments in minutes. To find out more, take a look at the November
issue of the Exploration Insights magazine.
I have a passion for geoscience, which developed during my undergraduate studies at the
University of Cambridge, UK. Having graduated with a degree in Earth Sciences, I pursued
this passion, completing a Ph.D. in structural geology from the University of Oxford, UK. In
my subsequent 13 years in the oil and gas industry, I have held a number of roles, including
as Senior Geoscientist for Neftex Petroleum Consultants, where I spent seven years on the
consultancy team. This involved working directly with customers on projects ranging from
regional tectonostratigraphic evolution studies, through basin screening and play fairway
mapping, to prospect identification and ranking.
We are committed to helping our customers overcome their exploration challenges. As we
develop our technical content, delivery platforms, and next generation applications, we are
always interested in hearing how we can better meet your needs. If you have a corporate
subscription and would like to discuss the development of our regional products, or would
like more information about FairwayFinder, please contact me.

Interest in offshore western Madagascar
has been sparked by recent success on the
conjugate East African margin. Despite their
similar tectonic histories, these margins
have different potential for the development
of oil and gas. Using 1D basin modeling in
the Morondava Basin, we demonstrate the
potential for oil generation on the western
Madagascan margin.

A Short Field Excursion
to the Shropshire Hills,
England
The Shropshire Hills occupy one of the
most geologically diverse areas to be
found in the United Kingdom, and in the
eighteenth century, oil seeps from this area
helped fuel the Industrial Revolution. This
article outlines a one-day field excursion,
which focuses on the identification of
potential source rock intervals in the
region.

The Exploration Handbook
— Petroleum Systems and
Basin Modeling
Geoscientists perform petroleum systems
modeling in order to assess the key
aspects of a petroleum system that impact
exploration risk. This modeling can be
conducted in 1D, 2D, or 3D depending on
the objectives of the project, and the time
and data available.
