108 | Great Geologists
Ziad Beydoun in the field in the Hadhramaut region in 1953.
As a result of his substantial scientific output, Beydoun
was awarded the William Smith Medal from the
Geological Society and the Medal of the National Order
of the Cedar by the Government of Lebanon. He died
in 1998, surrounded by papers and books as he worked
to complete a new synthesis of the geology of Yemen.
This key publication was published posthumously
and continues to be an important reference work. A
long-time colleague at AUB, Chris Walley, described
Beydoun as “a geologist and gentleman” and Ziad (or
“Don,” as he was called by his close friends) will live
long in the memory of all those who were privileged to
meet him.
