The war on diesel is also starting to impact sales in Germany as petrol engine sales
increased by +9.8% in the first six months compared to a rise of just 4.3% for diesel. This
means petrol sales now account for 51.5% compared to diesel at 26.9% a fall of almost 2
percentage points versus 2012. Hybrid sales are improving marginally and now account for
1.2% of the car market whilst pure electric cars remain niche taking just 0.35% with only
liquid and natural gas-powered cars lower with a 0.1% market share.
The compact class remains the most popular segment in terms of sales followed by small
cars (14.3%), medium (12.8%) and SUVs (12.2%). SUVs also saw the sharpest growth up
26.1% followed by campers (+23.6%) whilst the more traditional upper class segment fell by
6.5%. On the domestic front all the home brands saw positive growth except for Smart (-

top spot as increasing brand awareness and new models build on the past success of the
Evoque. Land Rover also benefits from the strong demand for Premium SUVs which is also
helping Porsche. Once again the low list price position of Dacia enables it to benefit from a
high RV percentage keeping it in the top 10 closely followed by Mazda and Kia.
