Russia ussian Union of Exhibitions and Fairs (RUEF) analysis has repeatedly confirmed that exhibitions are the mirror of the economy. In recent years a certain instability in the Russian economy was reflected in a decrease in exhibition activity indicators. Russia, however, is now the 12th largest economy in the world by nominal value and 6th largest by purchasing power parity and, following a period of recession, the economy has continued to grow since 2017. Growth of real GDP came in at 1.5% in 2017, and 1.6% in 2018. The Russian economy is also benefitting not only from rising oil prices, but also from increased trade and investment. In 2018 Russia’s foreign trade turnover increased by 17.6% compared to 2017, with exports growing by 25.6%. The basis of Russian exports have traditionally been fuel and energy products, although Russia’s non-energy export volume has recorded growth in 2018 and is contributing to export diversification. Russia’s vital statistics shaping up and its Central Federal District exhibitions is evident, accounting for 82% of the above indicators. RUEF members dominate the tradefair business with their specialised exhibitions – being involved with 85.7% of events and accounting for over 96% of net area and for 89% of exhibitors across the country. The leading sectors in 2018 in Russia were textiles, clothing, shoes and leather (accounting for118,756sqm, or 8.7% of the total net space); next comes agriculture (106,978sqm or 7.8%). Following these sectors come: armaments and military equipment, then food industry, beverages and tobacco; refrigeration and exhibition equipment; automobiles, bicycles, motorcycles and mechanical engineering, machinery and metallurgy. In terms of growth in exhibition space, automobiles, bicycles, and mototechnics led the way, putting on an extra 56,256sqm. Other growing sectors are education and careers (+7,192sqm.) and the optical industry (+4,629sqm). In 2018 RUEF members reported organising 623 exhibitions which had a net space of 1.4m sqm. These events attracted 76,000 exhibitors (including 61,500 national exhibitors and 14,500). The events also attracted 7.6m visitors. The annual turnover from the exhibition and congress activities of RUEF organiser members in 2018 amounted to 30.7bn roubles (just under half a billion dollars US), representing growth of 2.4%.
