IN FOCUS : THE EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS IN BASEL
The European Conference on Optical Communications ( ECOC ) is the field ’ s largest event . The 48th conference is being held in Basel , 18-22 September 2022 , where around 5,000 researchers and other specialists are expected at Exhibition Square .
Although Switzerland ’ s third-largest city has a population of just 200,000 and a surface area of only 37km2 , it nonetheless boasts a vibrant social and cultural life , as well as one of the world ’ s most productive economies .

It is thus hardly surprising that those in charge took the decision to hold their conference in this city on the Rhine .
The choice also fell on Basel due to the versatile rooms at the Congress Center and Messe Basel , which provide ideal conditions for the different ECOC formats . As Ueli Koch , general manager of ECOC 2022 , explains : “ The Congress Center makes it possible to stage state-of-theart conferences with hybrid elements on premises located right next to the exhibition grounds – a decisive combination .”

Jonas Scharf , head of MCH Venues which includes the Congress Center and Messe Basel , is also looking forward to the ECOC : “ Such eminent events help us to further consolidate our position as a centre of knowledge and innovation .”
