Do the stock markets tell us anything about trade shows ? In principle they must do . That ’ s what they are there for . The markets are the wisdom of crowds – what thousands and thousands of observers think of the prospects of every stock market quoted company . So , it may be a good time to look at the companies in our business in which you can still buy shares . Unfortunately there are now only three companies which could be called reasonably pure exhibition plays and which are quoted on the London or New York markets . These are Informa , Emerald and Hyve . Both
UBM and Tarsus left the market in recent years . As a spoiler alert , I hold shares in all three of the companies – and indeed have always held shares in every quoted exhibition company since Blenheim days . One problem in having just three quoted companies is that the media and some analysts therefore treat them as bellwethers .

As quoted companies have to declare their results honestly and openly every three or six months , it is not surprising that observers take this public information and extrapolate it to the rest of our business worldwide . But , needless to say , just three companies are not necessarily typical of the industry . In the case of Hyve ,
Emerald share price $ Dec ‘ 17 - Dec ‘ 22 ( Source : NYSE ) the effect of the Ukraine invasion was unique compared with the rest of the industry . It was interesting that the recent JEGI projections on our industry ’ s near future had all three quoted companies underperforming their peers over the next three years ( with both Informa and RX still running at less than 100 % of 2019 in 2025 – China is a big element here ). But then JEGI are unusual as the largest of the brokers for the business , and therefore have access to privileged information about a lot of other companies . So let ’ s look at how Informa , Emerald and Hyve have performed on the markets in the past five years . That takes us back to 2017 when markets were still quite strong and before the world was hit by Covid .
