Lucy Powell MP has joined the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Events ( APPG for Events ), as of 31 January 2023 .
Powell is the Labour Member of Parliament for Manchester Central and has been an MP since 2012 . She currently holds the role of Shadow Secretary of State for Digital , Culture , Media and Sport .
The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Events is chaired by Theresa Villiers MP , Conservative Member of Parliament for Chipping Barnet .
Founded in 2011 , the All Party Parliamentary Group for Events ( APPG ) is a crossparty group made up of members from both Houses of Parliament , and acts as the event industry ’ s voice in Westminster .
The APPG plays a key role in keeping the events industry high on the Parliamentary agenda , representing the UK events industry in Parliament , highlighting the value of the industry to the UK economy and society , engaging with politicians and industry representatives and ensuring that the UK remains a competitive destination for major international events .
New non-exec director at Hyve
Hyve Group has appointed Julie Harris as non-executive director , to provide board-level oversight of the delivery of the group ’ s ESG strategy .
The current chief executive officer of Comparison Technologies , Harris has more than 25 years ’ experience working in B2B and B2C media and events businesses .
Harris said : “ I am delighted to be joining the board of Hyve Group plc at such an exciting time in the evolution of the business . Out of the impressive transformation programme that Mark [ Shashoua ] and his team have successfully delivered over the last five years , has emerged a portfolio of market-leading events , in advanced economies , with a smart digital diversification strategy and I look forward to being part of the next phase of evolution and growth .”
Job cuts at virtual platforms
Virtual and hybrid events specialists Glisser and Hubilo announced 140 jobs set to be lost across both businesses .
UK and US-based Glisser founder Michael Piddock said his company would likely go into administration with the platform expected to be sold , but not the broader business . 25 staff were expected to be laid off .
“ There will be a time and a place to tell our story , but right now my priority is finding new roles for 25 amazing people ,” Piddock posted on his LinkedIn .
Hubilo , meanwhile , laid off over a third of its workforce , with around 115 employees leaving according to senior management .
The new round of redundancies follow cuts last July at the San Francisco and Bengaluru-based company , when 45 of its employees were laid off .
“ We have made our best effort to ensure that the impacted employees are supported with generous severance packages as well as outplacement services to give them a smooth transition . Looking forward , Hubilo is now focusing on physical events ,” a management statement said , adding “ We have very clear goals and a sound strategy in place for 2023 .”
