If there is one thing we have taken on board as a business over the last 18 months , it ’ s that virtual events will only take us so far and this cemented the need and power of connecting professionals across all industries face-to-face as effectively as possible . Back in May 2020 , we were one of the first businesses and venues in the UK to lead the reopening of the business meetings and events industry with the booking of more than six industry-leading exhibitions , including The Event Production Show , Space-Comm Expo , and The British Motor Show . As a team , we have pioneered new strategies to ensure that we can provide our client ’ s and our own events consistently with the same world-class experience we are known for . All while operating safely and securely , in line with industry and government Covid regulations , through seamlessly connecting our indoor and outdoor delivery for events that would typically take place in an exhibition hall . While many organisers shudder at the thought of hosting large conferences or exhibitions with outside and inside spaces , we have found that with dynamic planning and delivery , the variety of areas can complement and elevate the event experience for both the organiser , exhibitor and attendee . To support the future planning of large-scale outdoor events , we have highlighted our key learnings and the areas planners need to consider supporting when

Why outdoors is the new ‘ in ’

Joe Muir , aerospace commercial director at Farnborough International looks at managing large-scale outdoor events
bringing a traditionally indoor experience outside on a large scale :
Attendee experience The priority for any event should be providing delegates , exhibitors and organisers with a safe and enjoyable experience that drives results . While social distancing and PPE are no longer a requirement , we have found that delegates have different needs and expectations for attending events in a post-Covid world , including the continuation of wearing masks and limiting personal contact inside . Delivering events outdoors enables operational strategies to take place without hindering the overall experience , including staggered attendee flow , hybrid solutions and increased networking space .
Efficient transport connections and facilities We are very aware that delegates aren ’ t rushing to use public transport . According to Google ’ s 29 July 2021 Community Mobility Report , public transport is being used 35 % less than in February 2020 , so outdoor events are reliant on venues with car park facilities , connections with major UK road networks and close links to airports . While it may sound simple , this is a key feature that can be overlooked by planners when looking for a venue that offers outdoor space , in addition to its car park .

Maximising space To manage an event with both indoor and outdoor areas you first need to select an adaptable venue that offers you the best of both worlds without compromising on your audience ’ s experience or becoming a logistical nightmare . Not only does hosting a combined space event enable you to achieve the needs of all your delegates , but it also opens up your exhibition possibilities with the capability of showcasing large stands , entertainment areas and , if the Farnborough International Airshow is anything to go by , aircraft . At Farnborough International , we work in partnership with our clients and industryleading suppliers to deliver pioneering platforms for industries to connect , inform and do business .
