Tumultuous times

T he past month has seen a tremendous amount of change and upheaval . A new government , a new monarch , a process of etiquette and pageantry not seen for 70 years . Again this month exhibitions have been delayed , postponed and disrupted by current affairs .

By now the exhibitions industry should be used to doing an about-turn at the drop of a hat . We should be able to pirouette on the top of a pivot .
What all this change highlights is just how important it is to strengthen our core and keep the basics in check .
ESSA director Andrew Harrison ( p15 ) highlights the " stark and unpleasant reality " that suppliers and contractors are at maximum capacity .
Ops Nest founder Lou Kiwanuka minces no words in her warning to the industry ( p10 ). With new terrorism legislation Protect Duty imminent , plus a dire shortage of competent staff and wildly fluctuating prices , the situation cannot be ignored . She fears we will hit breaking point if we don ’ t fix the health and safety pressures soon . However , with change there is always the chance for hope . Health and safety teams were the enablers that got exhibitions back up and running again under the cloud of Covid-19 . They went from the " no department ” to the gatekeepers opening up the doors to allow live events to go ahead again , RX ’ s Emma Dengate tells us ( p20 ). At Hyve everyone up to CEO Mark Shashoua gets health and safety training to make spectacular and safe ( p23 ).
With overstretched teams it is more important than ever to make sure they are healthy and safe . The consequences of ignoring health and safety are hugely detrimental to individual brands – but even more significantly the eroding of values could have catastrophic consequences for the whole industry .
