Thinking differently

The AEO ’ s first conference since 2019 set out to discuss how the industry could think differently . With the premise of debating the unpredictable world of exhibition organising the 200-odd organisers gathered at the Hilton Metropole in Brighton on 8 to 9 September had little idea they would also be together assessing the impact on the events industry of being plunged into National Mourning . Emily Wallin reports

The AEO Conference programme aimed to address some of the key topics and challenges facing the industry , as speakers shared their insights and out-of-the-box thinking on a still unpredictable world .

Panel discussions focused on the big issues facing the industry , diversity , sustainability , recruitment and digital innovation , with the underlying message that events need to use their power to drive change .
But as the first day ’ s panels came to a close the assembled organisers relied on each other and different ways of thinking to navigate new unpredictability with the death of the Queen .
Executive coach and leadership speaker Rene Carayol told the assembled business leaders workplace culture was more important than strategy saying it was vital to put inclusivity at the heart of every business decision and to value and listen to every member of staff .
“ You ’ re the person they need to believe in ,” he said . “ Your business is what you want them to belong to .”
Chair Arc director Caitlin Read opened the conference by singing the praises of powerful women , singling out two new female CEOs Anne Lafère at EasyFairs and Lisa Hannant at Clarion .
“ It ’ s been absolutely incredible for women in the industry ,” Read said . “ Let ’ s keep doing more to raise the profile of women in our industry .”
Read later added : “ When we were in the planning stages we wanted it to be a sharing experience , we certainly didn ’ t anticipate we would also be dealing with such a momentous occasion with the Queen passing away , but there was something very nice about being here together and being able to share that experience .”
Informa Markets CEO Charlie McCurdy said it was vital of large global organisers to address their sustainability credentials .
