People Moves PEOPLE MOVES 2 MINUTES WITH… How do you intend to face the challenges in the industry? Grahame Muir, chief operating officer, Star Live How did you get into the events industry? Nepotism! I started as an assistant branch manager at Black & Edgington, too long ago to mention! Our focus is on getting our own business model running with optimum efficiency and ensuring that our business proposition makes life easier and cheaper for our clients. Star Live operates across different facets of the events marketplace, from brand activation, sponsorship management and partnerships, supplying brand ambassadors and event staff through to large-scale staging and grandstand seating. Crowning moment? I still hark back to 2012 when I was proud of being part of the team that delivered the only full-service design and build project at the London Olympics. Favourite thing about events? I love the dynamism with ever- changing trends and designs, and the fact that no two projects (or days) are ever the same. Best piece of advice? Treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself. Funniest work moment? What do you think you can bring to the new role? Previously being CEO at Arena Group has provided me with a lot of experience in growing a business. Key areas of synergy include optimising the seasonal peaks associated with the outdoor event sector, the geographical expansion and widening the offer we provide to our clients. These are all areas that we will address at Star Live. Getting stuck in the Hilton Hotel elevator in Astana, Kazakhstan. I’d had a heavy drinks night and was staying in the hotel. Only going down five floors when the lift broke down between floors (for several hours). I was bursting for the loo when I went into the elevator and let’s just say that I wasn’t when I finally climbed out of it!! Dream job? What will you do/have you done in the first month in the job? Running a beachside restaurant. Gain a thorough understanding of the business, their systems and process and getting to know all of the people who make it happen. Who is the individual you most admire? What’s on your desk? I am a great believer in a clean desk. Mahatma Ghandi (I have recently finished a book on his life) for his sense of calm, courage and compassion that seems in scarce supply in the world we live in today.
