We need to rebel against extinction

W elcome to the sustainability issue of Exhibition News .

As we move on from the hurdles of Covid-19 , it is more important than ever that we look at securing the sustainable future of the exhibitions industry . IMEX Group CEO Carina Bauer tells us ( p10 ) the exhibitions industry is only going to face greater pressure to demonstrate what we are doing to act sustainably . Big corporations are being judged on their ESG credentials and increasingly events that are seen as wasteful carbon centres face being cancelled . The future needs urgently tackling , today . But it ’ s not all doom and gloom . There is so much that can be done to make events more efficient .
Ed Tranter , managing director of 73 Media takes us through their journey to becoming B Corporation Certified ( p18 ). For Tranter , their social impact is just as important as their environmental one .
Joe Gallop takes a look at the UK ’ s first CO2 neutral venue on water ( p23 ). Oceandiva will have a raft of clever features to make it 100 % renewable when it docks on the Thames this autumn .
Hugh Jones tells us that despite the pack being stacked against him taking over RX Global just ahead of the pandemic , he is still in awe of the tactical wizards who create magic in this industry every day .
Whilst there are a lot of areas where exhibitions can be more efficient , less wasteful and more sustainable , the task is not insurmountable . The organisers who are already making a difference say the benefits are huge . People want to work for transparent , ethical companies . Exhibitors and visitors want to attend sustainable events . As Jones says : " We need it to be known that the exhibitions industry is on this ."
So , let ' s reduce , reuse and save exhibitions from extinction .
