Carrie Freeman-Parsons (1) has been appointed How do you intend to face the challenges in the industry? I will be keeping an ear to the ground and planning for the future based on what I see and hear going on around me and the wider industry. A lot will change over the next few years and we need to make sure we are as prepared as possible. Jenny Waller, head of sales at the Barbican How did you get into the event industry? I started working in Nottingham as a M&E sales & planning executive after university and loved it! From then I moved onto several other roles before focusing on sales at Park Plaza – that led me to the first of my roles here at the Barbican. Favourite thing about events? It has to be the overwhelming variety in everything we do. The people you meet and the different experiences you get while working in events – no two days are the same. What do you think you can bring to the new role? A different set of ideas and experiences. It is our uniqueness as individuals that gives us an opportunity to add value in our roles. The Barbican has so much opportunity to be creative and develop new ideas, which is something I am keen to explore. What have you done in the first month in the job? I successfully recruited our deputy head of sales, Charlie Smith, who is a great asset to the team. There Biggest frustration? The general perception of the events & hospitality industry. It’s not an industry people necessarily plan to work in, but it should be – it’s rewarding, you gain a variety of skills and it’s a lot of fun. Best piece of advice? Network – the events industry is a quite small and you never know when you may need to call on someone for a favour. This in turn means it is important to give your time, skills and advice when you can – in the hopes someone does it for you when needed. 1.
