For the past few months I’ve been reading a plethora of government strategies and plans; some impressive, and some that – to be frank – aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on. For this country to get the best deal out of negotiations with the EU and beyond, we have to firstly understand: what are all the challenges for our industry? What are the risks? It’s basic stuff, and no different than when you go fully prepared into a meeting. You know your goals, the risks, you have a clear strategy for what you want to get out of it and most of all, you should know your business inside out. I believe that the exhibition industry isn’t fully recognised by government. I also believe that we should have our own dedicated minister, and that the government is guilty of producing a half-baked plan without appreciating the potential of our industry – see cover story.
