Unleash the power of your communities
I f you haven ’ t seen the hard-hitting documentary ,
Escape from Kabul Airport , I strongly recommend you check it out on BBC iPlayer . It tells the inside story of 18 monumental days in August 2021 when 124,000 people were evacuated from the Afghan capital ’ s airport after the US withdrew its troops and the Taliban seized the city .
What it doesn ’ t tell you however is the small , yet significant role of one event organiser in the largest airlift in US modern history . Sarah Porter , CEO of Inspired Minds used the power and influence of the community she ’ d built up to bring the global AI industry together , to rescue 54 people from Kabul Airport during the evacuation . Her story ( which you can read on page 31 ) demonstrates just how important proactive and engaged communities are , not just for ensuring the success of exhibitions and events , but also for those times when positive collaboration can be a true force for good in the world . This Christmas , EN will rally the exhibitions community to support Mash Media ’ s expanded One Day at Christmas initiative . On 1 December , festive parties for elderly and vulnerable people will take place at ExCeL London , the SEC in Glasgow , the NEC in Birmingham , London ’ s Business Design Centre and in Farnborough . Your support , along with input from your wider exhibitions community , can be in the form of donations to help fund and spread joy at these parties , or by volunteering at one of them and giving something back to local venue communities . To play your part , get in touch with Mash Media or keep an eye out for the launch of the One Day at Christmas 2023 website for more details .
I ’ m sure I ’ ll return to the power of communities as a theme in a future edition of EN as it ’ s fascinating what people can achieve when they come together . So I ’ d love to hear your stories . However , this issue looks at organiser strategies to expand internationally and the debates around geo-adaption versus geo-cloning . Enjoy the read .
