Through Shifts and Shocks by Steve Vamos
As an EA to the CEO , with over a decade of experience in mining , property development , manufacturing , and hospitality , I found Through Shifts and Shocks by Steve Vamos ( Ex-CEO of Xero ) to be timely and enlightening . The book offers insights on navigating change , managing uncertainty , and refining leadership in today ’ s fast-paced business landscape .
A central theme that resonated with me is that leadership must evolve to meet the demands of constant change . Vamos highlights how leaders who fail to adapt ultimately lose their ability to drive progress . Another powerful idea discussed in the book is leadership in times of crisis . Vamos asserts that outstanding leadership isn ’ t about avoiding challenges but confronting them head-on . In my role , I often face situations that require quick decisions under pressure . Vamos ’ advice on maintaining calm and focus in stressful moments has significantly shaped how I handle high-pressure situations .
A key takeaway from the book is the importance of Emotional Intelligence in leadership . Having worked across multiple industries , I ’ ve come to value the need to understand the people around you — whether colleagues , clients , or stakeholders .
The book is an insightful guide for anyone in a leadership role , particularly those navigating constant change and uncertainty .
The Natural Advantage by Dr Jenny Brockis
If you ’ re anything like me , I am all for making my brain that little bit smarter . In an era where being sharp and astute gives you an edge , I was keen to get stuck into reading Dr Jenny Brockis ’ The Natural Advantage .
Brockis ’ book is well-detailed and practical . It gives us humble explanations of the functions of our brain and focuses on how leveraging our abilities can lead us to have stronger neurological functions for a longer period . Brockis , a doctor and neuroscientist , breaks down how the factors in our lives , primarily work , family , stress , and general overstimulation , impact the brain ’ s ability to work optimally . It ’ s impressive that you can unlock little-used functions by following practical tips on improving the brain ’ s functionality .
What I enjoyed about the book is Brockis ’ ability to not make you feel like you have been doing it all wrong . Her real-world examples and case studies make you realise that there are many types of ‘ brains ’ and that each one functions differently at different times . A highlight for me was her discussion on neuroplasticity – how the brain is always working and changing with the information we put into it and how the brain continues to adapt and rewire itself to accept the challenges we throw at it .
The book is especially helpful in the EAs world , where we are the epicentre of the office . As the author notes , “ stress is not the enemy of performance ; it is unmanaged stress that holds us back ”.
